Write a response to this discussion: A situation that I have encountered about a patient not being brought into their treatment plan would be when I was working on the hospital floor and the patients family had decided that the patient would be a DNR and that the patient was proven to be not of right mind and that the patient was not able to safely make proper decisions. Having a test that can be performed with the patient to make sure that they are able to make desicions are great evidence based practice (Karlawish et al., 2002) If being a competent healthcare provider helps to make sure that the patient is receiving safe care that they need (Izabella et al., 2020) The patients’ values were not being honored in that the patient stated multiple times that she was able to make sound decisions and that she was not ready to die yet. If the patient’s wish had been honored, it could have had a great impact on the patient and her getting well and getting out of the hospital and being able to go home and heal to live longer. The patient was not given the antibiotics and extensive wound care that would have been given to another patient if the family had not made the decision to be a DNR. The value of the patient decision would have made a large impact on the course of treatment for the patient. The decision aid inventory can be added to professional practice so that when I am in the situation of being the provider I will be able to make the proper care decisions for the patient. Making sure that the patient is having their own voice and having a meeting with the patient and then with the family to see if the patient can properly make decisions. This was a very hard situation to be a part of and not being able to provide the care to the patient that should have been given due to not having any orders. Research found that there is a large correlation between patient and provider (Kılınçarslan et al., 2025).
