reply to this post: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is what led the nursing profession, beginning with Florence Nightingale, who identified problems and devised solutions to improve patient care. Over the following decades, EBP evolved, and education programs expanded to incorporate emerging evidence. Stannard (2021) outlines the EBP process in five steps, starting with step one, as identifying the problem, assessing best evidence, appraising the evidence, applying, and lastly, evaluating. These steps mirror the nursing process itself. Stannard (2021) also notes that problems in healthcare often find the nurse rather than the other way around. Such problems become barriers to smooth EBP implementation, such as disturbances in the work workflow due to faulty equipment, frequent interruptions by patients and family members that disrupt care delivery, and more. Another issue with effectively implementing EBP in healthcare is the lack of published recommendations in addressing how to facilitate implementations, and the lack of information on how to effectively sustain a solution (Rogan J., et. al, 2020). The two main barriers preventing nurses from fully realizing EBP goals are constant interruptions during shifts and inadequate policy support and training. Some ways to that these two issues can be addressed is having enough staff members delegated to tasks that do not require nurses’ attention, such as broken equipment, updating family members frequently, and insignificant interruptions by patients. To strengthen policy implementation, the facilities should post clear, concise policy reminders at every nurses’ station, conduct brief and regular rounding to review updates, and provide protective time for nurses to read, discuss, and practice new procedures. With adequate staffing, streamlined communication, and visible policy support, nurses can translate evidence into consistent, high-quality care.
